Report for the week ending 1/17/2010 Just when you think you have seen everything mother nature let us know just how powerfull she is. This report is more about observations this week than actual fishing, yes our snook fishery took a major setback this week with many slot size and oversize fish not making it thru this cold spell. The places that I saw and had reports from were Pine Island Bokelia, St. James city and Pineland. Sanibel's Dinkins bayoo all of the worse effected areas had water depths of less than 6 ft. mostly man made canals and shallow bays. Yes there are going to be a lot of bad reports written in the next few days but I would like to tell readers to take them with a grain of salt. This is a natural thing and in the 30 plus years I have lived here I have seen it several times, the fish always come back!. Florida Wildlife Commision has put a closer on snook season until August 31st. which I totally agree with, I encourage everyone to go to myfwc.com for details its also a site you should know about for updates on these situations. I would like to ask everyone to be conservation minded in these times. The good things that I take from these situations are that fish have the ability to adapt much better than humans, they have been doing it for millions of years. All of the deeper canals that I observed this week had fish that were there because of warmer water. Ladyfish, jacks, pompano, snook, snapper, sheepshead, cownose rays and even a few sharks were able to keep moving thru these tuff days and nights and will servive and yes there are live snook in the deep canals. The one fish that I have not seen a lot of are seatrout alive or dead, I will take this as a sign that they have gone into deeper holes to get thru this time. Remember dont give up fishing just change your tactics slower and lower. Tight Lines.
