The snapper fishing this week on our drift fishing trips in Fort Lauderdale has been outstanding. Muttons are congregating in 100-200ft of water on and around the Fort Lauderdale reefs. These big snappers are fun to catch and great eating and are considered to be one of the top gamefish to catch on lighter tackle rod/reels. Florida is known for its excellent snapper fishery and this month, the best bite for them is in Fort Lauderdale.
Yellowtails and mangrove snappers are biting well too, but the highly prized mutton snappers are biting the best. Muttons are one of the largest species of snappers that we catch in South Florida. They average 4-6 pounds but can reach weights of up to 20 pounds once in a while. These mutton snappers in the photo below were caught by these ladies on a 4 hour drift fishing trip aboard the Catch My Drift. We were drifting in 100-140ft of water, using ballyhoo plugs(a ballyhoo with it's head and tail snipped off) and whole sardines as bait.
The snapper fishing has been best in the afternoons and at night. The morning bite has been okay, but the reel action has been later in the day and into the evening hours. Snappers come out of the woodwork at night so we get the best action on the other species of snappers at night (mangroves and yellowtails). If you're looking for some fun and a good chance at catching some of the best eating fish in the ocean, come on out on our $40 drift fishing trips. You'll have a good time.
