HAPPY FISHING FOURTH OF JULY!
"Little Miss Judy's Believe It or Not!"
My Personal Ledge
When I was a small child I had my special places on my father's big wooden boat, which was named "Miss Jerry." There was the bow, on the top where the life raft was lashed, dashboard, and dinning/state room window ledge. The bow was big and had lots of playing room. Not only that, but the porpoises would ride the waves made by the bow in a most unbelievable manner. They looked like they weren't even moving any of their fins, but they certainly did make way fast! The top of the boat where the raft was lashed was the greatest space ever, because when I climbed up there I was out of all watchful eyes! I remember being able to see everything from up there! However, there were rules about these areas meaning I couldn't go out there all of the time. If it was too rough or raining the big "NO" came from Captain daddy's lips. So therefore this particular area had "limited access!" This boils down to the fact that when you are a child what you aren't allowed to do you want to do more!
While inside the boat I pretty much had "free reins!" The meant anywhere at any time! As a child I always like climbing up. So therefore I would always find the high spots to take that badly needed, but not wanted, "nap!" There were two places that were out of the way of the customers and high up at the same time. The first was daddy dashboard, which wasn't too bad of a place to ride and sleep. However, it sometimes took too long to move all of these "King Edward" cigar boxes. My father purchased his cigars by the boxes for two good reasons. The first is he smoked a lot, but didn't in hail and he used the empty containers as tackle boxes!
Now that's story in itself about his cigar boxes. When he was looking for something that he had put in a cigar box, which all looked alike, he actually knew what each contained. Daddy had dozens of them stacked and lying around full of tackle. I must add this: He never marked a box at all! I asked him one day how he knew and his answer went something like this: It's an age thing! I look puzzled, but knew the reasoning wasn't far behind that last statement. Daddy said, "I can tell by the coloring on the boxes, meaning the lighter the yellow the older the box." I never knew to ask, as I would now, "why don't you just use a tackle box?" Even though I didn't know then what the answer would have been, I think I have figured it out. It might have been, "because they were rust free!" Back in the old days, tackle boxes were made of metal!
After I looked at the dash and ascertained "too much work to remover cigar boxes," I moved on to my most favorite spots of all times! This move was to what become known as "my ledge!" This was located in an area that was called "Miss Jerry's bow state room!" There was big table, which had long booths seats at each end. You could lower the table making up a double size bed. It was great! However, this was not my ledge, because daddy was using it for something else. He lowered the table making it a bed, but then he hung up a strong pipe to which all life preservers were laid across. My personal ledge was the so-called buffet, which was located to the port under two long windows. The top part or should I say, "my ledge" even has a lip on it so that things including myself wouldn't roll off. It was the coolest spot! Once perched in my area I could take a quick nap or just look out the open windows at all of the wonderful sights that the ocean had to offer.
Many a dream was spun from this spot. Imagine lying half asleep, semi dreaming, and be awoken by a splashing noise from out side the window. There is something you need to know about a "splash in the ocean!" Some sort of creature that came from down under normally makes them. You don't always get to visually see what caused the splash making your mind say, "You actually did!" This is where the imagination of a six year old takes over for sure! We are talking about everything from sea monsters to mermaids! Heck, it's for sure I saw them all from my own personal ledge! I had a wonderful childhood, which was full of the best kind of adventures!
