Beat the heat and take advantage of Tampa Bays number one nocturnal feeder the Snook! While there are 4 types of Snook the "Common" Snook is the most prevalent in Tampa Bay waters. Snook are best described as voracious ambush predators. At other times they are best described as having lock jaw. By far and away one of the most challenging fish around.

Early July with water temperatures in the mid 80's means snook can be found from shallow back water haunts to the beaches of the Gulf of Mexico. One area that is consistent for snook most of the year are the local residential canals. After dark lighted docks and bridges is where you will find the snook action.

As you have heard me say before this time of year I like to hit the beach for the last 90 minutes of sunlight then move into the canals. My clients like the scenery, the cooler temperatures and the consistent action. On occasion nights can be frustrating watching numerous snook that won't play. Last night they cooperated with a steady bite. White baits and pinfish were the bait of choice. Double hookups were commons and several toads were lost in the barnacle encrusted pilings. Watching a snook inhale your baits as good as it gets! I fly line most baits and have my anglers toss away from the lights and into the shadows. On occasion I will add a small split shot weight to target deeper in the strike zone.

The small weight also puts my anglers in a spot to also get Redfish that tend to be deeper.

Remember to tighten your drags if you have been fishing the beach as once you hit the docks and bridges its combat fishing at its best. On the beach you can let the snook run, not on the docks as you have to be ale to keep them away from harms way.
