Mosquito Lagoon,New Smyrna Bch and Daytona Bch Fishing Report

With hurricane Matthew beating up the FL east coast a week ago it left a lot of destruction behind. On the brighter side of things it has seemed to clean the water up a bit in the Lagoon system. It has also brought in more water than usual . With the water being higher than normal look for the bait to move up shallow and the game fish to follow. I like to target the bait pods this time of year starting out the morning throwing plugs and twitch baits in to the schools of mullet and as the sun gets a little higher switching to a soft plastic or Aqua Dream Spoon. The breeder redfish can be found around all your major inlets at this time of year from Ponce Inlet in Daytona Beach south to Cape Canaveral you can also find these breeders in schools through out Both Mosquito and Indian River Lagoon from twenty to the hundreds preparing for there yearly spawn. The snook bite from Ormond Beach south to Edgewater and through out the New Smyrna Beach area has been on fire with quite a few slot fish and a lot of over slot fish coming boat side. When targeting snook I like to look for structure and a lot of moving water I prefer the out going tide but have done well on the beginning of the incoming as well. I like to throw twitch baits and soft plastics with the tide along the edge of the structure almost always triggering a bite. The flounder are starting to move into the backwaters of New Smyrna Beach and Edgewater as well. The best method I have found for these ambush feeders is bouncing the bottom with a soft plastic and a 1/8 - 1/4oz jig head in a shrimp or mullet color. Target the mud and sand bottom around the oyster bars and points along with the edges of the sand bars where the bait tends to gather.

Good luck and be careful there is still a lot of debris left behind by hurricane Matthew so navigation can be dangerous.
