Fort Lauderdale Fishing with Top Shot Sportfishing Charter Boat and Capt. Zsak
Dave and Daniel Nelson (father and son) chartered the Top Shot Sportfishing charter boat team for a private deep sea charter boat sport fishing trip in Fort Lauderdale, FL
Fifteen to twenty minutes after leaving the dock, lines were in 120 ft. of water at the sea buoy in Fort Lauderdale, 1.8 miles from shore. If you venture off another ¼ of a mile, you would find yourself in 500 ft. of water, which we exclusively have here in Fort Lauderdale, due to Fort Lauderdale’s extreme drop off. The further north you go, the further the drop off swings off shore.
We started the charter catching bait at the channel marker #3 by making turns around the marker with a string of jigs catching Blue Runner baits, and we put them in our live well. I started working offshore looking to target Mahi as there was an easterly wind and large patches of weed. We worked for a few miles with tons of weed but had no luck catching the Mahi, so we decided to try kite fishing.
I set up just off the reef in 150 ft. of water two kites – one to the right and the other to the left with 3 live baits and one dead bait. Within the first 15 minutes of fishing, we had a Kingfish come through and terrorize our baits, loosing three to the Kingfish. He then tried us again but we got him that time. Daniel was the angler, and he caught a really nice Smoker Kingfish weighing close to 30 pounds. We re-set the baits and were ready for the next fish. A large splash occurred on the right long bait, and we hooked up a Cobia. Daniel was the angler again - he did a good job fighting the Cobia and got him in the boat.
We went back to kite fishing, and just like before, baits were set, and we were ready. This time on the left long bait and with a large splash, the line started ripping off. Daniel hopped in the chair and started fighting the fish – it was a Hammerhead Shark. This Hammerhead gave us a couple big runs and ripped out a lot of drag. After a solid fight, we got this awesome Shark along the side of the boat, got the hooks out and the Shark swam away.
It was now time to head back to the dock. The happy anglers retired into the a/c salon watching the plasma TV and enjoying the relaxing trip back to the dock at Bahia Bar Yachting Center, 801 Seabreeze Blvd. Fort Lauderdale 33316.
