Old Days Carolina worm deal!
Back in the old days the Carolina rig was born and it made fish catching history. This is basically a simple rig. This rig goes something like this: "main line, slide on sinker, swivel, leader, and hook" There was a rule of thumb when using this style of rig for the traditional plastic worm. The leader shouldn't be any longer than 12 inches between the swivel and the hook's eye. The weight was normally ¼ ounce with the hook being a thin-bodied 3/0 non-weed less style.
The best color worm was black. Back in the old days, worm didn't come pre-packaged as they do today. You got to pick out your worm. The rule of thumb in this category was "the softer the better!" When the worm was threaded on this thin-bodied hook it was done so that the tip of the hook only protruded a fraction making it practically weed less.
Working this worm is another story. It's best to cast and let the worm sink to the bottom. After it settles a bit, make about a half of turn on the reel and lift the rod tip up just enough to move the worm slightly. The idea is to fish the lure just as slowly as you can. Here are two suggestions for hooking up your fish after it has taken your worm. The instant you feel a bump, drop the rod tip, which should be held high, and then when the line straightens out set the hook. This hook set should enable the hook to penetrate the fish's jaw.
The second suggestion for hooking up that fish that has taken your worm: Once the fish as taken you bait, open you bail, and let the fish run for about 10 seconds. This gives the fish time to swallow your worm almost guaranteeing you of a hookup. However, playing the 10-second waiting game can give a fish too much time and they might simply drop it! Both hook set styles will work. However, it's all about timing and that particular fish that picks up your bait!
