Spent today 1/23/2010 on the Butler Chain of Lakes thinking that I could offer my
client some sight fishing for bedding bass sense he is fishing for three
full days.To my surprise we didn't see the first bed and every fish my client
caught was in 15 to 25 ft of water. What this tells me is the water temps
are still just a little cool for the spawn to start here in Central FL.
I have used this chain of lake over the years as a tool in telling me when the
actual spawn has started. The Butler Chain offer's some of the clearest
water we have here in Central and what that means is the fish on the Butler Chain
will start to spawn earlier then most other lakes in the area because they are
able to spawn in much deeper water and they are not affected by the cold
weather nearly as bad as a dirtier lake's where the fish must spawn on the shorelines
in two to four foot of water.A few of the bass caught today were females and
from the looks of them the spawn has to start soon. The bellies on these fish
were very puffy which means the egg's are in place and now it will just take
mother nature to get the weather right.
All fish caught today were on drop-offs located on the edges of
spawning flats. The key was to find steep drops with
15 to 25 ft and bring the baits straight down the ledge.Just about
every fish caught today had one or two other fish follow them to the boat.
With the boat sitting in 25 ft of water my client was able to dangle a bait
2 ft under the boat and catch one of the fish that followed.I guess you could say that we did get to do a little sight fishing it was just in a little deeper water then I planed on sight fishing in.
