It has been and up and down week for bass fishing on the St Johns River.
The first part of the week we seen a big change of weather and strong winds
which made the fishing very TUFF!!Water temps dropped into the low 60's
and 20 to 25 MPH north winds had the fish in a none active mood.
Saturday we seen a big change in wind and water temps and the fishing
picked right back up.Kent Sommers and Mike Nichols of OH and OK
joined me Saturday for a fullday trip we fished schooling fish during the
morning and found some really nice fish busting shad in the main river.
Are afternoon plan was to shiner fish for some big bites and the plan
worked out well with Mike catching the biggest fish weighing just under
8 pounds Mike also had a GIANT FISH hooked that jumped and spit the
hook.Mike caught a 10 1/4 pound fish with me this past Feb and we both
agree the fish he lost was much bigger.Today I fished a 4 hr trip with
William Olde and his 12 year old grandson Thomas and the bite was non
stop with three doz shiners used in 4 hrs.Total fish on this 4 hr trip was
16 with a couple nice 5 pounders being the biggest.I still have a lot of open
days in May and this is a great month for catching Trophy Bass on the
St Johns River as the spawn is over and the big fish began to feed heavily
on main river points and shellbeds.
