Snook season is back in action February 1st and many anglers will be hard at work to bring home a snook for the dinner table. The best action for snook has been near docks, seawalls and drop offs. Artificial lures and live baits all work for the snook but fly fishing is another great method to battle the linsider. Many of the snook are schooling up and offer double digit numbers of catches for anglers. Remember the slot size for the snook is 28 inches minimum and 32 maximum.
Tarpon action has been great in mangrove lines areas, juvenile tarpon are schooled up busting glass minnow pods. The tarpon are very active during the first of the outgoing and last of incoming tide. Live baits drifted with the tide produces best results, but fly fishing using clousers and black deceivers work great. Doa shrimp in glow and gold and doa 4 inch cal in pearl also entice the silver king to strike. Typical size of tarpon is 5 to 30 pounds.
Trout still continue to produce stellar action, artificial baits like the doa cal 4 inch jerk in green back chartreuse tail works great with a jig head. Live baiting for the trout is another option , chumming help to bring the fish off the bottom and produces more hook ups. Target grass flats, channels and deep hole for the best action. The average size of the trout has been 2 to 7 pounds.
The grass flats are full of life for anglers, providing plenty of action jacks, ladyfish, bluefish, drum, trout , snook and snapper. A doa cal in glow and gold worked near the bottom gets the drag screaming. Popping corks another great method for working the flats helps angler to see the strike and catch more fish.
The week cool fronts have not effected the peacock bass fishing, there very aggressive striking shiners with a vengeance. Doa cal jerk baits in pearl or green back chartreuse tail trigger theses beauties to react. Seawalls , rock banks and drop offs all hold the colorful peacocks. Fly fishing for the peacocks is a blast and is great for all levels of fly fishing anglers, doa 2 inch shrimp and poppers are the main course for the drag pulling beasts. Typical size is 1 to 6 pounds.
Large mouth bass on lake Okeechobee continue to impress allowing anglers to witness strikes on the surface and tango with fish in the 3 to 7 pounds class on artificial lures. Doa airheads and 4 inch cal worked in the walk the dig motion causes for some commotion as largemouth inhale these baits. Shiners are another method for anglers to catch lots of bass and big bass as well in a relaxing way. Put a cork and shiner on the line cast out and wait for the strike does not get any better.
