Usually by now the redfish bite is pretty strong in the upper bay systems in Pensacola. Lot's of rainfall and hot weather has pushed the bite back a month or so. With temperatures cooling these fish should find there way back to the mud flats of Blackwater and Escambia bay very soon.
On this particular morning, I got the pleasure of guideing Bryson Bratcher, a very ambitious angler who is eager to learn the ins and outs of shallow water redfishing. I told Bryson before the trip that it might be hard to find fish with the lack of salinity in the upper bays right now. Bryson didn't care..."I want to learn strategy" he said. So off we go...into the backcountry marsh.
I have spent very little time in the Blackwater and Escambia marsh this year but with over 200 hrs spent in past years, I had a pretty good idea where to look. Bryson and I looked around for 2 hours before getting into a nice shcool of about 50 fish. We pulled 6 off the school and 5 off another. I thought it was a success seeing how most of my time this year has been spent in the ICW.
Bryson's goal is to become a tournament redfisherman like myslef so I spent most of the trip going over tides, rigging, what to look for, tournament strategy, pre fishing strategy, and everything else he needs to know in order to become a successful tournament angler. I was very impressed with how quick Bryson picked up the sport.
Here are a few pics of the trip
