Fishing Report for Week of Aug. 19th 2007 For Master Baiter's Sportfishing and TackleWritten by: Stan Gabruk

When you live in the tropics, the weather is always something you keep an eye on, especially fisherman in small to smaller craft. With the Tropical Storms to the South of Puerto Vallarta, Hurricanes South of Hawaii and Hurricane Dean which marched its way into the Mexican Mainland, you have to ask yourself, what's up with the Weather? But for Puerto Vallarta this Summer or Vernon is Spanish, has been warm, but we've had breaks from the heat. The Seasonal rains have been in the evenings for the most part, with cloud coverage and cool breezes in the afternoons. So we've been having a wonderful Summer!

But, that's not to say the weather hasn't affected the fishing grounds! Late in the week the Tropical Storm of Acapulco was kicking its heels in the form of 10 ft. swells (short intervals) 40 mile per hour winds, and a lot of "tossed cookies". On top of that the water turned green and that put an end to most people's day. This was how the conditions were for the Bloodydecks.com Tuna Shootout Tournament this year. The Second day started out rough as well, but the afternoon turned into something spectacular! The Seas calmed, the wind all but stopped, and the Tuna Started Striking like Crazy! For more information on the Tournament go to: www.bloodydecks.com and read all about the action, with some fantastic pictures as well.

Corbetena this week has been the place to be again this week. Lots of action, Sails, Yellowfin Tuna, and Marlin on tap. Liveys (live bait, Chorras, Bonita) were working great, as long as you could make bait. Nothing is more frustrating than to see your silver skinned dream fish launching itself from the sapphire blue water, silver skin sparkling in the sunlight and you can't make bait! Whatz sup wid Dat? Or in English, what's up with that? My recommendation again is, get yourself one of those Little Tuneys. It's a rubber Bonito that trolls like dead bait, has the feel of a Bonita, looks like a Bonita and can save the day when hungry fish are waiting for something you can't give them. I know several people who have taken my advice and were glad they did. I can tell you where to get one here in PV if you're interested.

The other hot spot this week has been the Marietta Islands and the famous trash line. It's been a little rainy, producing some green water in the bay, making it perfect for Mahi Mahi. So shorter duration trips to this area have produced a lot of happy people. But remember the female Mahi Mahi are breeding, so throw them back. Bring back the males for your dinner table. The ones you throw back will produce hundreds of chances for you next year. Lots of other action here as well this week, most notably Sails have been dancing their days away out there.

El Banco has picked up a little this week, but it's still not on fire by any stretch of the imagination. But, if you're shooting for the Monster Yellowfin Tuna, this is where you have to go. The farther western section of El Banco has some deep holes that with the right electronics, you can spot them. Run bait in their direction and you could boat a 300 plus pound Monster Yellowfin for your living room wall. Your wife won't care, trust me….. It would be like hanging a Volkswagen over your mantle, that's how big these fish are, right now!

Those heading north of Punta De Mita are being rewarded with Mahi Mahi in the 30 pound range. Sails and some Striped Marlin within 10 miles of shore. For the last couple of years this area has turned into a reliable hot spot. So when in doubt, head this way, you'll be happy you did.

Something we all have a tendency to forget around the docks of Marina Vallarta, If you were to compare this level of fishing to any other sport, it would be the equivalent of the pinnacle of achievement. It's the equivalent of a pro sport like football or basketball. To keep a top notch charter boat equipped, safe and functioning correctly, it takes a true professional who spends the time and money to make the process smooth and problem free. Remember this when you ask for a cheap boat, what you're really doing is asking for a disappointment you paid way too much for. Use the professional companies in their shops. Look into Travel guides, ask friends, read fishing reports all over the net. Be smart, be safe, and have fun with a real professional. I work with several daily, so just ask me, I'll fix you up!

Master Baiter's is still supporting the Graffiti Clean up Project in Puerto Vallarta. For the last couple of weeks the paint can scribblings have reappeared in some places. But no worries amigos, Carlo is on the job with paint bucket and brush in hand. If you'd care to become part of this worthy effort, you can by donating money, time or words about the project to others.

Until next week, don't forget to kiss your fish!
