Greetings from sunny South Florida! So far this year we've experienced a warmer than normal winter, with daytime temperatures reaching nearly 85 degrees and nighttime lows in the mid to upper 60's. The fishing in Florida bay has been "RED" hot this winter, with most flats holding redfish.
This past weekend my fishing partner, Luis Sierra, and I fished the Swamp Guides Ball fishing tournament out of the Lor-e-lei in beautiful Islamorada. Although clear and sunny, the wind blew out of the East-Northeast at 20 knots with gusts to about 25knots.
Despite the strong winds, we managed to catch 15 redfish, 10 of which were big enough to measure at least 20 inches, and four of those were well over 30 inches. All of the redfish were sight casted and all ate live shrimp on jig heads.
Windy days can be very productive, especially on warm winter days. Don't let the wind discourage you from heading out to fish. Use the shallow banks to block the waves and try to run on the lee side of the islands to block the wind. You may run longer but you will stay dry, which is key this time of year.
Tight lines!!
