Thursday March 5th, I picked up my clients at the dock in Dunedin about 7:30am. We headed straight to a spot in Clearwater that usely has some redfish hanging out. The tide was high at 8:30 am so we started throwing some cal 3" jig tails in bait fish color, dark green on top and white on bottom. Some had a little red flake in them. I was slow trolling the electric motor with my customers casting out front. Half way up the mangrove shore line we got our first red. A small 20" beauty. I also spoted lots of other reds in the area. We dfifted and picked up several more reds about the same size.
Next stop was just a few miles away. Lots of oyster beds lined this flat. We started our slow troll along the flat and saw numerous redfish moving around. I changed baits to a jig head w/ live shrimp. I pinched the tail for smell and had them place a perfect cast out front of the school and slowly twitched. The reds picked up on the shrimp and hooked up. We hooked several and lost several. One of these reds was 24 inches. Also one of my anglers caught a nice 19" trout mixed in with the reds.
We left that spot a headed for an area that could possibly hold snook. Looking for that slam. Upon arriving I saw the water temp was 65. Up three degrees from the outer bay. We switched back to cal jigs, the back water snooks favorite. We started across some great looking bottom that had grass areas mixed with sand holes. Perfect location for snook to sit and ambush their food. After about 45 minutes, we added another redfish and only saw and spooked one snook.
A great day was had by all. Check out some photos at web site below.
