The lower stretches of the South West Miramichi River is stuggling with low water again due to no rain. With heavy rain that was expected today or tomorrow they are now calling for just showers. The only thing that is saving us is the cool water temperatures. The temperature is in the low 60's and that is keeping the fish in good shape and keeping the Angler happy when they decide too take. Some pools are very low and almost to low to fish until there is rain to bring the water up.
Some anglers had some luck over the weekend. Jordan Hallett managed to get out on Saturday and land a grilse on a butterfly. And he also rolled two on a brown bug on the Renous River. Randy Arseneau that fishes by the Mouth of Cains River on Friday past seen several fish moving through there pool some very bright and some very dark colored. Guide Gary Colford and clients from Maine USA managed to have some luck fishing the Cains River at Moore's Pool on the weekend. One guy got a salmon on a Bomber and the other was on a Undertaker #8 single. They rolled several others on dry flies but seen very few fish showing on there own.
I was waiting for the rain to start for the most part of the day and was getting bored after tying some flies, I decided to go try one of my Almost that I tied. When getting there my cousin was there Jamie Colford and he said lots of fish but they are not taking a thing! But I just wanted to try the fly so I said I would give it a try anyway and have a say when I came in. So I first went to a 6lb test leader and put the fly on, A #10 double Almost. I seen a couple fish jumping before I went out. And on the very first cast he grabed it! I thought it was a chub! A nice big grilse covered in sea lice! Hook bill too. So I took a nice look at him and released him on his way. I then went on to finish my way down through the pool and I heard a reel scream above me and the guy said fish on! There must of been a run going through at this time, They were jumping everywhere! I then rolled another on or about the tenth cast or so. I rolled two more on the Almost before changing to a Whisker dry fly created by Louis Butterfield of Maine a good friend when I was a kid. On the very first cast with the dry fly a salmon over 25 lb's came up for it and I thought he had it but there was nothing that tightened. I fished for awhile longer but not much was happening so I called it a day.
So the story is we need some rain to get the river up for the Fall runs. Will the Fall runs be as good as the last few years? Only time will tell and we are narrowing down and getting closer to some very prime time fishing on the Miramichi! Until tomorrow night tight lines and happy fishing.
