Fishing Fort Lauderdale on Happy Day Today with Capt. Zsak

Eric Hynes along with friends, Brian, Jake and Tim from Minnesota and North Dakota chartered the Happy Day Today along with the Topshotfishing team to do some deep sea sport fishing in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Eric, a general contractor here in Fort Lauderdale, was telling his friends about his last fishing trip on the Happy Day Today this past November winding up with 4 Mahi Mahi's, 2 Kingfish and 11 Bonitos.

Winds were out of the east at 8 mph, temperature was in the mid 70's, with a strong current going to the north at 3 ½ knots. Eric made a remark that Brian would like to catch a Sailfish so we stopped to purchase a dozen live Goggle Eyes from T&T Bait located in the inlet in Fort Lauderdale. Fifteen minutes after leaving the dock, I was in145 ft. of water at the sea buoy in Fort Lauderdale, FL. We put out two kites with two live Goggle Eyes from each kite and one live Goggle Eye with a spin on lead from the rigger and a Mylar teaser.

Our first strike came from the rigger bait; this fish had sharp teeth because he bit through our monofilament leader. I noticed a school of flying fish exiting the water – some predator must be close by. Then a Sailfish came out of the water free jumping between the two short kite baits – not interested in feeding – just shaking off the remoras on his body. I knew I was in the right depth range – then it happened – Sailfish - right long!!, Sailfish - right short!!, Sailfish - left short!! – a triple header!!! All three Sailfish were in the air immediately – one of the Sailfish threw the hook. The two Sailfish were on, both heading in the same direction with one line going over the other, creating a Chinese fire drill. Mark, our mate, untangled the lines – then one Sailfish decided to go north and the other stayed going south. Brian and Jake were the two anglers and both hopped into the fighting chairs. Jake brought in the Sailfish first and released the 63" Sailfish. After a 30 minute battle, Brian brought the 2nd Sailfish to the side of the boat, measuring 91" with an extreme large girth and estimated weight of 65-70 lbs.

With mission accomplished, it was time to head back to the dock at Bahia Mar 801 Seabreeze Blvd. Fort Lauderdale 33316.
