Anglers fishing Sarasota Bay with me on my Action Craft flats skiff the Snook Fin-Addict, out of CB's Saltwater Outfitters on Siesta Key, caught and released trout to 19" and reds to 22" on CAL jigs with shad tails and DOA Deadly Combos recently. Bill and Sally Wester, from Cincinnati, fished with me and caught and released trout to 19" on DOA Deadly Combos at Stephens Point, the Marina Jack flats and near ICW markers 5 and 7.
Keith McClintock, from Lake Forest, IL, fished skinny water with me along the east side of Sarasota Bay from the Ringling flats to Long Bar. He caught and released a pair of reds to 22" and several trout on a MirrOlure Top Dog, Jr. and a CAL jig with a shad tail.
I spent some time in DE visiting family and had a chance to fish Chesapeake Bay one day with my brothers Kirk and Joey Grassett. We fished out of Hooper's Island, MD to get below dirty water and debris in the upper bay coming out of the Susquehanna River. We didn't find any breaking fish but Kirk caught a striper and a blue on a Clouser fly fished on a fast sinking fly line in a deep cut between 2 islands. Very low salinity, due to the recent flooding in that area, probably pushed fish further down the bay.
Back in Sarasota, tides will improve towards the end of next week as we head towards a new moon. We'll have very high tides in the morning, so look for reds along mangrove shorelines or the top of bars. There are already reports of albies (little tunny) and Spanish mackerel in the coastal gulf so that should also be a good option.
Tight Lines,
Capt. Rick Grassett
