Gulf Stream Fishing Report
This Winter Catching So Far Has Been Good!
During this time this area really can offer fishermen a "fish catching show!" The bottom line is that you have to pick the right fish day! This means you need to follow the weather patterns and predictions so as to make sure this long ride is a smooth one. No matter what your departure time should be an early one. The reason being is that most reports made so far for this blue water winter year have indicated an "early morning bite."
As far as best bait pulled it's been standard and what I called "Old School." Baits pulled has gone something like this: cedar plugs, Ilanders (juniors) rigged with small to medium ballyhoo, and daisy "squid" chains with rigged Ilander in tow. On some days the baits were pulled close while others they needed to be 100 foot plus to the stern. As far as what was pulled over the gunnels? The sky has been the limit with fishermen catching black fin tuna, few yellow fin tuna from the northern area, Wahoo, a few billfish sightings as well as actual releases, and a few dolphins aka "Mahi Mahi."
Our Blue Fin Tuna Time Is Here!
During this time we start looking for the "passing of the blue fins." Any day now I expect to hear strange reports of soaring blue fins in close feeding behind shrimp boats as they lay the best chum line of all times, which is "their by catch!" Scattered reports of near shore artificial reef fishermen seeing large tuna like looking fish the size of small Volkswagens free jumping with their mouths full of bait! If you think about it and I do all of the time, "we fishermen are the luckiest of all, because we never know what we are going to see and whether or not those getting the report will believe it or not!" However, the bottom line is we really do try to report it just as it happened!
