Like all other fish species, Swordfish have to eat. Is there a rule that says they will only bite at night? We know these creatures are nocturnal, but that seems to imply that they will rise toward surface baits during the night. With their oversized eyes the size of baseballs, the Swordfish is sensitive to the sight of light. So it only makes sense that during the day they are swimming on the bottom.
An interesting fact is that if you look at a Swordfish bill, you will see some that curve to the right and some to the left. There are a few that will point straight as a north heading. And most times you will see the bills are chipped on either side leading us to believe the Swordfish is foraging for food, swinging his bill from left to right on the bottom during these daylight hours and possibly hitting against hard structure such as coral.
Now here's the challenging part. How do we get a bait to the bottom and present it perfectly, and how can we drop to 1,500 feet successfully without the line spinning having a straight up and down presentation. Techniques are still being perfected and this months Florida Sportsman magazine gives away some great advice.
