SAWFISH
I had a pleasant visit from Beau Yeiser the other day. He is the staff biologist for MOTE center for shark research. Beau current quest is locating SAWFISH! If you have ever seen or even thought that you have seen a SAWFISH in this area, please personally contact Beau at 941 388 4441 or to report any sightings or encounters by calling 1 800 691 6683. The email address sawfish@mote.org. Log on to www.mote.org/~colins/sawfish/index.htm to get information as well as see some great pictures. Please report any sightings to any of these numbers or website that I have listed. It would not only be greatly appreciated by Beau, but also by the sawfish that you are reporting!
In the fifties my father used to catch these strange looking so called SAWFISH sharks. As you all know back in those days anything that bit the hook was a good as in the boat. I'm sure had my father known of the possibility of extinction that he would have released them unharmed. Daddy brought home the bill of a sawfish one day, which I wish I still had in my possession today. The width of the bill was over 10 inches. The outer edge of the so-called bill was lined with strong short white strong teeth. My father always told me that this bill was used to saw open first what the shark was going to eat. According to my father that also included little girls. I always laughed at that statement. However, I never really forgot about it especially when I was swimming in the old creek!
