Fishing along Florida's Space coast have been good reports Captain Keith Mixon (www.mixinworkwithplay.com). In the last week or so, the redfish bite has improved along drop offs near the flats in three to four feet of water. The reason for this is because of the low water levels throughout Mosquito Lagoon, and both the Indian and Banana Rivers. These low water levels are nearly a foot below the average for this time of year. When targeting schools of reds, scented jerk baits and gold spoons have worked well for fish measuring up to 35 inches in length. Many of these "bull" reds have been caught south of the Haulover Canal in Mosquito Lagoon and the northern end of the Indian River near Titusville, Florida during the last couple of hours of the day.
In addition, speckled trout are basically biting everything that you can throw at them. If using live bait, pigfish and mullet cannot be beat when fished around schools of bait fish. Rigging these baits under a cork just above the grass line is a sure bet with a large "gator" trout. If using artificial lures, small noisy top water lures also have worked well around schools of bait at first light and low light conditions. Due to some dirty water in our area, anglers should fish artificial lures with a slow retrieve. This will help fish to locate the bait for a solid hook up
