Fishing report for the charter boat "Happy Day Today" 46' Hatteras with Captain Zsak.
Conditions for the day were Southeast winds, partly cloudy and the seas were 2' – 3'. Joe and his son James who reside in New York chartered us for the afternoon trip from 1pm to 5pm.
The North current and Southeast wind created a strong Northern current and a color change in 300' of water. We started fishing 3 miles South of the inlet and two miles offshore in 175' of water trolling 6 lines, 4 surface and deep baits.
In about an hour of fishing the between 100' of water to 300' of water, we caught a handful of Bonito, a few Kingfish and a Barracuda. In discussing the days fishing and what other species we could target, Joe inquired about targeting a shark for his son to catch. We certainly were happy to accommodate and headed to deeper water and started to prepare for shark fishing. The bait used is both fresh cut Bonito. We fished in 400' of water. One shark bait on the surface, one bait in the mid column and one bait on the bottom.
With the Northern current at 1.5 knots, we drifted the 3 baits in 400' for just over an hour and a half. All of a sudden a nice 8' Hammerhead shark surfaced just behind the boat. The Hammerhead shark circled behind the boat searching for the blood and oil scent of the Bonito slab. We were all excited to see this shark spearing and darting left to right in search of the surface bait. The shark quickly found the bait and we were hooked up. 13 year old James hopped in the chair, began fighting the Hammerhead shark. He did a great job and fought the shark for about 30 to 40 minutes. Jackson our mate wired the shark to the boat. After taking a few pictures of the shark and a good look at the awesome looking Hammerhead shark, we used our de hooker to remove the hook and return the shark back to the sea as we do release all sharks.
Thanks again to Joe and James, we enjoyed the fishing charter and hope to have you back again in the future.
Tight lines,
Capt. Zsak
