Fishing along Florida's east coast has improved in the last week reports Captain Keith Mixon (www.mixinworkwithplay.com). Around Port Canaveral, snook have been caught on a variety of live and artificial baits near the jetties, docks and the S.R. 401 bridge located at the west end of the port. Live mullet, pinfish, and shrimp have worked well when free lined near these structures at night. When fishing for snook around structure, I suggest using 20 pound test Power Pro with a mono leader of 15 to 20 pounds in strength. Circle hooks should be used for an easy release for snook that are not within the legal size limit. Remember, Snook season closes June 1 along the Atlantic coast.
Along the flats, top water lures have worked well for trout during the early morning hours. Thanks to the full moon, trout have been feeding all night on schools of bait. Artificial lures such as Storm's 3/8 oz. Rattlin' Chug Bug (number 351) has helped bring these fish to the boat a few hours before daylight. On calm mornings, redfish have been seen tailing near mangrove shorelines. Scented jerk baits hooked weed less have been used when targeting these fish near Titusville.
