March madness has arrived and the fishing has followed suite, spring fishing offers great action for a variety of species. Anglers should expect spectacular fishing the next few weeks as many should be gearing up for the up coming mullet run.
Snook action is superior along sea walls, docks, sand and grass flats. Early morning snook are active taking heddon spooks walked slowly near structure. As the sun rises jigs and live baits take precedence. Anglers are having great success jigging the bottom enticing snook to feed. Green colors have been the go to, 1/8 jig heads allow anglers to work baits, feeling every move and strike. The real low tides we received the past week, allowed my anglers to enjoy great sight fishing action along mangrove banks and sea walls. The snook are basking in the sun, staying stealth is the key, live baits and jigs worked in front of snook and lead slowly, triggers strikes. Smaller snook are schooling in deep holes in the river most of these fish are fat snook, with a few tarpon snook in the mix. Slot sized fish, I found are lurking in the shallows were drop offs and deep water access are close by. Average size of the snook has ranged from 2 to 15 pounds.
Grass flats and muddy bottom areas are holding trout, jacks, drum, flounder, ladyfish, and blues. Live baits drifted with corks entice strikes. Jigging another way to cover more ground allows anglers to feel the strike and is gratifying as well. The trout have been small the past week but still great to have them in the area, bigger females are around deeper holes and drop offs. The flounder have been found on the flats but also along sea walls as well, they are ranging from 1 to 3 pounds.
The sea walls are still making home for the big jacks, these fish are 10 to 30 pounds. Feeling strong just cast out a live mullet or top water spook and 10 to 15 minutes later let me know when its boat side. The jacks are schooled up and the smaller 5 pound jacks are in pods of 20 to 40 fish.
Tarpon action has slowed down not many fish being caught but still seeing fish on the surface. Hopefully once he mullet run begins the tarpon bite will fire back up. The smaller juveniles are easier to entice at times, taking jigs and live baits free lined with the tide.
