Happy Holiday Fishing To All!
Saltwater inshore, offshore, blue water fishing report, Freshies Suggestions, and "Little Miss Judy's story! Thanks for reading! Captain Judy
Blue Water Report
The first of December proved to be very active especially around the South Ledge and R 8 Naval tower areas. Large catches of 15 to 30 pound black fin, few dolphin, couple of sailfish, and at least a dozen Wahoo were reported. I even had some reports of yellow fin being caught off Charleston, SC. The bottom line to this report is that when you get the weather window open you should take advantage of it.
As far as what to pull in the old spread, I suggest pulling series of lures close or far back. From the reports that I have been receiving all hits were best pulled in this fashion.
Blue Water Report
South Ledge Goes Wild Again!
December 18, 2008 Thursday
It doesn't happen off the coast of Georgia all of the time, but when it does "it's great!" On Thursday December 18, 2008 the seas were calm, unusually warm temperatures, and to top off all these good conditions "there wasn't any fog."
Jim Sheffield, Mike Green, and Chris Mercer arrived at the South Ledge Thursday morning before daylight in hopes of a big catching affair. Well it happened within two hours the crew had 13 black fin tuna averaging 15 to 20 pounds each in the fish box. The fact of the matter is before 5:00 PM the crew was back with the fish cleaned and the boat washed. According to the report they rode home at around 50 knots. I got to tell you I love these kinds of fish days! Now here's how there fish catching day "went down!"
Once arriving at the South Ledge a quick scan of the "what was down under was taken." Jim reported that all tuna were holding deep feeding on bait pods schooling on and around the ledge. According to the report they basically fished the same area for the full two hours that they fish. I have to tell you ..I have been getting reports from this "fishing crew" for a while and believe me "they know what they are doing!" The last report I received from them was on December 3, 2008 where they had another "catching blast-O-Fish!" On this day they caught 15 black fin tuna in less than two hours pulling the same exact spread. Their act is packed full of the right stuff!
Back to Thursday December 18, 2008
All tuna were marked deep feeding on schools of bait on and around the South Ledge area. According to the report the crew only saw a few tuna jumps, but this wasn't over the area that they were fishing.
Once again as it was on their last "blue water fishing affair" all lures hit were pulled "way back" in the trolling spread! The term "way back" means at least a hundred feet or better. Jim was pulling cedar plugs and small Ilanders rigged with ballyhoo. Their catch consisted of "tuna only!" After all, that's what they went for. However, he did hear that one Wahoo might have been caught. This information was heard over the radio chatter. His most popular lure was one that I haven't mentioned yet. The reason being is that I wanted to "go detail" on this one. Jim pulls what I call "Old School" and from the report always received from him "it's definitely working!"
For those that don't know about the term "Old School" here's my version: It basically means just what it says, "fishing the way it was done back in the good old days!" Now Jim isn't old like me, but he's using the "Old School Theories!" He sticks to his plan, because he believes in it! His fishing team as well as his fishing ideas work!
For bait Jim was pulling cedar plugs and single hook rigged ballyhoo with small Ilanders. The rig that he caught 50% of those tuna in the old fish box was on was a "Daisy Chain." The squid rig is made with about 4 plastic squid in a row with the last squid being rigged with ballyhoo. This type of pull rig imitates "fish chasing fish chasing fish!" Once you get to know a tuna, it's understood that they are the jealous type and nothing else prompts their bite like the "Sport of the Chase!" Thanks to all for the report and the tuna!
