Fishing along Florida's Space Coast has remained consistent reports Captain Keith Mixon (www.mixinworkwithplay.com). In the past week, mangrove snapper have not been able to resist live shrimp when fished inside Port Canaveral. During an outgoing tide, a free lined shrimp has worked very well around the jetties, docks and other structure. The average length of these snapper has ranged from nine to eleven inches with an occasional larger fish.
Just outside the Port, cobia has been willing to bite a variety of buck tail jigs that are bright in color. The majority of these cobia have been caught near the buoy line up to two miles off shore. The average weight of these fish has been up to twelve pounds.
Inshore, redfish have been biting a wide variety of lures and live bait north of the railroad trestle in Titusville. With an average length of twenty inches, several of these fish have been caught along drop offs in three feet of water or less. Anglers should be able to find small schools of reds following bait fish. During this time of year, anglers need to keep in mind the mortality rate of many fish when released. This is due to warm water temperatures. Special care and a quick release will help the survival rate of many species.
