Captain Judy's Saltwater Fishing Report
Inshore, Offshore, and Freshies Suggestions
King Fish Mania!
For those fishermen that don't want to go with live or fresh dead bait there are other options to consider. The artificial stuff will get the job done with "fast biting action!" Rapala Magnums lures have been great in the past and are still working on today's fish. The only difference from now is the fact that there are much more color options. Back in the old days when you wanted a color change you needed to bring your own favorite color spray paint. My father spray-painted his lures at the house while hanging them up in the wind to dry. However, when time wasn't on your side and the fish bite was "quick color changing was apropos." My father always had different cans of quick drying spray paint on his boat. In most cases he didn't even un-tie the lure off the leader. I have fond memories of lures hanging in the wind and those old cardboard boxes full of those multiple color cans of spray paint.
However, as with anything else change took place offering us fishermen an array of two and three tone color lures. The hot lure last week was the "Fire Tiger." My good friend Anthony, soon to be Captain Anthony, fish with this lure had some great success. As he reported his catch for this particular day we both concurred that other lure of this style might have worked. Rapala has a great color line up to choose from. All you need to add is a small piece of single strand wire 30 to 50 pound test to this lure and tied it on to your 20 to 30 pound test main line. This lure is best pulled behind the prop wash of your boat. All boat's prop wash's can vary from 15 to 30 feet. This brings to light the fact that the boat is actually the biggest lure out on the market!
A Squid-ing Affair!
Here's another scenario that was offered up by Anthony. He rigged up squid lures with feathers on flexible wire. For hook size he suggest going with a single 7/0 "J" style. Williamson lures have a line of squid lures called Dorado Jig. They come pre-rigged with a weighted head, hook, and leader. There is another old time squid brand, which we have used for many years. It made by C & H lures. It's called Dolphin Delight. This lure comes pre-rigged with 7/0 hook and 135 pound test cable with swivel. Both lures are ready to use all you have to add is the water that the fishes swim in. No bait needed when using these lures. All you need is continuous forward movement.
