Fishing Fort Lauderdale on Happy Day Today with Capt. Zsak

Jesse Deister along with his brothers, Andy and Joe, and friend, Mike Bettencourt, chartered the Topshotfishing team to do some deep sea big game sport fishing in Fort Lauderdale, FL. The boys were getting away from the frigid weather in Ohio to enjoy sunny Fort Lauderdale and fishing. Winds were out of the northeast at 17 mph, seas running 4-5 ft., temperatures in the mid 70's.

On our way out, we stopped to purchase a dozen live Goggle Eyes from T&T Bait located in the inlet in Fort Lauderdale. Fifteen minutes after leaving the dock, lines were in the water at our drop off, which is 120 ft. deep at the sea buoy in Fort Lauderdale, 1.8 miles from shore. We started off trolling with two plainers down, one with a blue and white sea witch in front of a double hook Bonito strip and the other with a chartreuse sea witch in front of a double hook Bonito strip. For surface baits we went with three Ballyhoos.

I trolled the reefs ranging from 80 ft. of water out to 300 ft. looking for the right location to do live bait fishing from the kite. A rip and color change was forming in 183 ft. of water north of Fort Lauderdale - a perfect avenue for the predators to pursue their prey. We put out two kites with two Goggle Eyes from each kite and one Goggle Eye from the rigger. As the boys were discussing business and the good times they had the night before, our first fish was a Shark on the right short; Mike was the angler and caught a Black Tip 4 ft. Shark. Pictures were taken and the Shark was released. I reset both kites. A short time after, an explosion on the right long occurred, as line screamed off the Shimano 225 reel. Joe was the angler and hopped into the fighting chair to reel in an 18 lb. Black Fin Tuna. The next hook up was a Mahi Mahi caught by Jesse. After resetting, the black shadow finally appeared on the left long, immediately coming out of the water and tail-walking towards the boat. Sailfish!!!! Andy was our angler and hopped into the fighting chair to do battle. Fifteen minutes later, Russ, our mate, brought the fish into the boat for picture taking; the Sailfish was released to fight again.

It was time to head back so the anglers went into the a/c salon for the trip back to the dock at Bahia Mar 801 Seabreeze Blvd. Fort Lauderdale 33316.
