This week feels like Spring is in the air with the warmer temperatures in the low 80's the water is heating up fast. Today the water temp was 71.8 in Aripeka area. Trout are on the shallow grass flats, oyster bars, and troughs. Lures are producing the best right now, the mirrodine 17mr in the 808 and 50 color is deadly to trout. White flukes rigged wheedles is great. The trout are ranging from 15 to 25 inches. Red fish are schooling up and good numbers this week, Tuesday I found a school of 40 plus red fish most were over the slot we caught them on live bait pin fish. I like to cut the tail off and rig them with a 2/0 circle hook and a 25lb leader. The reds are on the move with the heating of the water just keep covering ground and like I always say look for the mullet schools and the reds will be close by.
Spanish mackerel are in the deeper flats 8 to 12 feet of water. I like to drift with a chum block out the back of the boat, jigs are working for us. Use a 1/4 ounce jig head and a little john white soft bait twitch the jig fast and be ready to the macks to rip off some line. Sheepshead are on the deeper rock piles in 10 to 15 feet of water. Anchor up current chum with frozen to get the sheepies fired up. Rigged up a rod with a 3 foot piece of 25lb leader a 1/4 ounce egg sinker and a 1/0 to 2/0 J hook. Pinch off the tail of a select shrimp and hook the shrimp in the tail end. Keep a tight line or fish with a open bail holding the line in your fingers as the fish takes the shrimp it will rip off the reel flip the bail over and give it a hook set.
