"Little Miss Judy's Believe It or Not!"
Sputnik Monroe Brothers
Back in the old wrestling days my father watched his television so close I don't know how he even could see it. When the hitting and slinging got good "his arms went into action!" In other words, it was like he was right there in the ring with his favorite wrestling star. Back in Daddy's era there was this duo brother team that I won't long forget, because my father always rooted for them. Their names if memory serves me right were "The Sputnik Monroe Brothers!" My father thought that their wrestling abilities were the best especially in "tag team events!"
As I watched daddy fling his arms as the blows were delivered I couldn't help but think he had put himself right in the ring with them. I remember this one time that he shook the television set so hard that the actual picture tube (part you look at) came loose in the cabinet. So therefore this left daddy with a TV that wobbled in the cabinet and I almost forgot to mention a coat hanger antenna. I wasn't there when he broke off the TV's antenna. I'm sure someone must have done something on the tube that daddy didn't like.
I would like to try and describe what I remember about the Sputnik Monroe brothers. Back then there was mostly black and white. So therefore I remember them wearing tight black trunks, which revealed certain parts of their anatomy that according to daddy, had to be staged up for the show. My father always said, "These parts had to be fake!" According to him everything else was the "real McCoy" with this one exception. I do remember them wearing black high style boots, which if you look real good, had soft soles. According to my father wrestling wasn't about kicking it was more about hand-to-hand combat!
The Monroe Brothers had their own signature hairstyle, which always helped to identify them at least for me. Daddy could see them coming for a mile. They basically had dark hair, which was combed back on to their heads. In the middle of this black hair was a streak of blonde, which made them really stand out. Back in the old days I can only assume that added "blonde streaks" were considered something that mad men would add to their hair design. According to Daddy, just the fact that these men types would bleach their hair showed how tough they really were!
As I think about it not much has changed in the wrestling world, because strange hair dos are definitely in and fans still fling their arms as if there were part of the fight match!
