The weatherman slipped us a mickey. Yesterday I was pretty excited the wind would be less than 10 knots. It seemed ideal for squid. Got out by the Pioneer Canyon, dropped the Ahi SJ-1000 jigs down, the plug came out of the hornets nest. Caught squid madly even though we had 11 to 15 knots of breeze and were drifting sideways at 1.4 knots. The squid were shallow, 580 feet, but the drift took us 'over the edge' to 1,257 feet. The anglers pulled until they ran out of pain pills and then we ran in for crab. 161 squid, 17 limits of crab. Someone helped themselves to the outside string, for a week long soak full of bait, not much results. Inside did better.
Two notable anglers today. One fellow was 87 years old, he pulled in 2 squid early and enjoyed watching after that. Another angler was 80 and brought three sons. He pulled in 6. Capt Mike said to the 87 year old, Curt Bowman, 'You have lived another entire lifetime compared to us' which really put it in perspective!
The crab bait store is open. Less than 20 miles away.
