Today was one of those days that makes me love my job as a guide.
I had the pleasure of guiding a father and son on their first bass fishing
trip together. Frank Ioppolo and Son Trey 9 years old joined me for a four
hour trip on the St Johns River. I loaded the boat this morning with Wild Shiners
and we headed out at 7am. First area we fished the wind was a little much
but Frank and Trey still managed 4 Bass in the 3 pound range. We made a move
to an area that had less wind and things started out slow for the first 30 minutes
then the fish came to life. We had a double hook up and then just single bites
for the next 2 hours. With 5 minutes left to fish I see Treys shiner get hammered
by a big bass at the edge of the grass mat. Trey grabs the rod and set the hook
like a PRO. The fight was on and at one time I had to hold onto Treys shirt to
keep him from being pulled over the side of the boat. I heard him say
he needed some help but Frank and I let him handle this big fish all on his own.
After a 5 minute fight I was lipping a Beautiful 7 LB St. Johns River Trophy Bass
for Trey. The fish was 22 inches long with a girth of 15 inches. Frank is having a
replica done for Treys first Trophy Bass
The total fish count was around 12 fish for 4 hours of fishing and what I call a
great day on the water. The next few months is a great time to get the kids
on the water as the bass are very active with the water temps cooling down from
a long hot summer.
