Today we spend drifting the river in search of wild Steelhead. The morning was very cold and windy, I wondered if the weather was ever going to change. The snow starts to fall and we open the thermos for a cup of hot coffee enroute to the first pool of the day.
The water is perfect and every corner looks inviting. We decide to fish a few of the pools just as a warm-up to next week's action. Having fished my Peaches fly most of the day, I finally hit pay dirt. Attached is a pic of a fresh Steelhead that took my stripped fly. I was no more than 3ft from shore when it took. And when we left the pool another Steelhead surfaced in the back channel right at the boat. Having talked to a local angler who fishes centrepin and an artificial lure, he was posting 15-20 fish days. Those are exceptional numbers and once the water temperature increases these bottom lurking Steelhead will become very aggressive to the fly.
