HAPPY FISHING FOURTH OF JULY!
Straight from Helm
Captain Matt Williams of Miss Judy Charters is what I call a "sure Deal!" The fish know it and the customers pretty much love it. It's not what he catches it's the methods in which he uses that makes it all worth while. As everyone knows fishing isn't catching for a reason. However, when you always give it your best shot the fishermen as well as the fish get an opportunity for some great action. This boils down to "working both ends of the rod!"
Captain Matt's fishing report is simple and to the point. He is using his standard set up, which is weighted-popping corks, 18 to 30 inch 20 leaders, and a standard 1/0 Kale hook. The leader size can vary due to the whims of the fish. You know the old saying, "the clearer the water the lighter the leader!" Keeping that in mind I suggest keeping some different pound test monofilament leader material in your tackle box. I suggest 10, 15, and 20-pound test. These should cover all of your bases. Fluorocarbon leader materials are great, because they are abrasion resistance and almost invisible underwater. If you don't like using fluorocarbon leaders I suggest going with just standard monofilament leader material. It's not as abrasion resistance, but it will work and has for many years. I suggest especially after landing a fish or getting several hits that you take the leader and run it through the tip of your fingers. This is a good way to feels nicks and almost-through breaks. The area in your leader closest to your hook gets the most abuse. Trout have a find set of teeth and quite often they hit the leader as they are trying to kill your shrimp.
Captain Matt's bait choice for this week is live shrimp and Gulp baits. He purchase's live shrimp when available at the tackle store. When it's not he throws the old cast net a bit. According to last week's report it took approximately 20 minutes to catch one quart of shrimp. As far as the Gulp Baits he is using "Pearl White Shrimp" pattern.
He has been catching spotted sea trout in the rivers and sounds, which are mixed with quite a few flounder. His customers have been landing a few red fish, but with the trout bite being so consistence Captain Matt has focused on this arena. If you plan on targeting red fish this is the time to fish points and mud flats. In other words, "if the area looks fishy it normally is!"
