Early morning fishing has been both hot and cold along Florida's Space coast reports Captain Keith Mixon (www.mixinworkwithplay.com). In the past week, the black drum bite has been hot around the spoil islands in the Banana River near the "No Motor Zone". These fish have been willing to hit a variety of live and dead baits in one to three feet of water. Clients have found that a little patience pays off when sight casting to them. Even though these fish have been spooked easily, they will soon return to feed on shrimp, mullet, clams, snails, or even oysters.
Around Port Canaveral, flounder have continued to bite a wide variety of artificial and fresh dead baits along sandy bottoms throughout the port. Many flounder have been caught in waters six to twelve feet deep with an average weight of three to four pounds.
On the other hand, the snook bite has cooled down a little. The majority of snook caught have been measuring up to thirty inches in length. Both live pinfish and mullet have worked for a solid hookup around the jetties and light docks at night. Anglers need to remember that snook season remains closed along Florida's East coast until September 1, 2009.
