Rating: Penn Torque TRQ7 Spin Reel
Reviewed on November 12, 2011 by Doug Yankauer from Cape Cod, MA

The Penn Torque TRQ7 is like a winch. I fish Cape Cod Canal with it's strong currents. The Penn Torque has the power, smoothness, and drag to handle any fish the Bid Ditch can throw at me. I have owned, and sold numerous Van Staal reels in all sizes and can honestly say that the Penn Torque doesn't take a back seat to any reel I have ever used. I have also used the Penn TRQ7 to land yellowfin tuna up to 90#. Like I said, this reel is like a whinch. Great Job Penn.

my torque reel works great. as to the complaint about it being tight, the torque reels are fully sealed. it wont be as smooth as other penn spinning reels. try picking up a van stall, they are just as tight or tighter. take the seals out of the penn if you would want it to be more free.

davo from australia's review should not have been posted. the torque spinning reel was just released Sept-1-2010. His review was done almost a year ago which means he had a field test reel or a prototype reel. i am sure penn's production reels fixed all the problems davo's prototype reel had.

I bought this reel as my backup, but it is quickly becoming my go to reel. I have the 7000 series and loaded it with momoi braid of about 280 yards. I fight mostly tarpon with this reel and have yet to find a reel that can stand the crazy long runs of tarpon time after time. When fishing from land and a tarpon goes for a run, you need line capacity and a reel that isn't going to buckle under the pressure. So far this reel has shown me both. I would like to see a spinning reel like this with a larger spool though.

Rating: Excellent Reel for the Money. Surfworthy and Boat.

I have fished the Production version of this fine reel which was field tested, redesigned and upgraded by Penn many times during the 2 years before its release. Totally 100% Waterproof, Sand Resistant, great line lay and casting ability. Very Smooth for a fully sealed reel. Tuna worthy drag power. Modern spool design. Penn has a real winner here. Its a very sweet reel thats built hard as nails. Destined to be a legend. A bit pricey but the good stuff usually is. Still less monet than the other high end Asian reels. Go Penn!

NOT AS GOOD AS THE PENN 706Z ! BUT A GREAT REEL.

Sadly the reel disappointed on many points. The manual/automatic bail switch broke on the 3rd outing. The stated drag was not matched on the scales and spikes were common resulting in high stresses on the rod and terminal tackle. Twice I broke a ball bearing swivel (Sampo)yet the drag was set no where near the rating of the swivel. It is no where near as smooth as a Stella/Saltiga. A case of beauty is in the eye of the beholder but beneath the skin its butt ugly. Cmon Penn, get back to where you once were...

I just saw the Penn Torque at the dealer show in AC. It is a great feeling real. It also has a switch for auto or manual bail close. Another thing I really liked is the shaft is SS not titanium that if you hook a big fish it could bend when it gets hot like some other high end real. Time will tell.

Rating: Expensive but Nice

this si a grade a reel, but be ready to spend the big bucks, the retail is going to be from 600-700 dollars, and if you think that it is worth it to be competing with the top dogs of the spinning reel competition, then go ahead, to be honest, everything about this reel is un necessary, but if you have the money, it does make a nice conversation piece, there are plenty of reels that will have the same feel for hundreds les, they may not be quite AS good, but for the money, you might as well buy two two hundred dollar reels with some nice rods and save your self the heart ache when you realise you spend 700 on a spinner.

I heard that these were on display at the recent convention, but I could not make it. I am a loyal Penn user and have always wanted something a bit more high quality and looks like this might be the reel. Anyone know when this will hit retail stores?

Rating: Looks Great, but Pricey

I got my hands on a torque spinner at ICast in Florida and they look great. Could be out of mosts price range, but will compete with some of the higher level reels available on the market.
