Taking care of business and working over time.

East Cape conditions have shifted gears. A few weeks ago it was opportunity after opportunity. Game fish were smaller in size and very plentiful. Now it is all about quality. Big tuna are coming to the scales everyday and more blue marlin have become active. We are not experiencing near as many events as spring or early summer but when of these bruisers bite hang on!

Tuna have been with porpoise and boat traffic at times is an issue. As soon as a few boats show up the tuna go down and don't want to bite. We can mark them in our Simrad sounder at 40 to 80 feet but are have a hard time getting them to cooperate.

A strategy that is working well is planing longer days. We just camp out on the fish and wait for the other boats to leave. Without fail as soon as the others drive away the fish pop. Spending a couple of extra hours and working over time is paying off.

Carl Rizzo along with brothers Tom and Bob Gorney fished with us 5 days last week. Rizzo is a gentleman, a good fisherman, a good sport and also very lucky. This is a very deadly combination. Everybody made fun and laughed at his left handed Accurate reel and he just kept pulling on the fish.

The un-told story. Skipper Jesus "Chuy" Cota was on the swim step leadering this tuna when it took off and the fishing rod knocked him in the water. I'm bummed I wasn't on the boat to witness it. The way Diego tells the story is a riot. He heard ker-sploosh and then could just see Chuy's hat in the water with the skipper under it. Diego went on to say Chuy came straight up out of the water and back onto the step like a cat.
