Captain Steven was back on the water Wednesday after the sudden passing of my Mother. Mom was so proud of the charter business I've built.
Today's trip started on the flats adjacent to the Skyway Bridge gathering bait. It was an exciting adventure as my first toss of the cast net was loaded with great white baits and a 3' shark! He was not happy! Bait was so thick you could walk on it. Good friend Captain Jim Fesperman was starting a trip so I waved him in and I got his bait in one toss.
I ran to my favorite summer time hole and it did not let us down. The first cast resulted in a trout within 30 seconds. It was game on for 3 hours. A mix of trout, large mackerel, sharks and ladyfish inhaled bait after bait.
Nonstop action has been has been a common theme the last 60 days. With water temperatures hot you must think deep. Anchor up in 6-8' and work out to 12'. Long shank hooks are a must with so many toothy fish mixed in. Twice we hooked large fish that screamed drag and came unbuttoned before we got a peek!
Rigging is basic with numerous options. A float with 3' of leader is easy to use and casts a long ways. Fly lining white baits allow the bait to cover more water and depth. You can also add a small split shot weight which will get you into grouper, snapper and flounder all in the same area.
