Redfish snook and trout can all be targeted right now and moving water is the key to a more successful trip. Nick and Jim on a recent outing with me were able to catch the big three of the flats, with one of the trout being a very plump 21 inches on the first cast. It was a nice way to start the day. We had to work a few areas but once we found the redfish and chummed them up they were very cooperative. Jim, after a good battle landed his first snook ever and he was stoked.
We were using scaled sardines in the 4-6 inch range on 10lb braid, 3 feet of 30lb fluorocarbon leader and a 2/0 circle hook.
Look for the redfish to congregate in grass flats with many sand holes and a lot of mullet activity. They will also work oyster bars and mangrove tree lines.
The trout will be out on the open grass flat sitting in the sand holes waiting for a bait to come past that it can ambush.
Snook can be found lying in the deeper sand holes on the grass flat, cuts in the mangroves, mangrove points and large and small passes where current will bring bait to them.
