It has been really hot, and I'm not talking about the weather! I'm talking about fishing. While some types of fishing have slowed down a bit, other types have picked up. The weather has also been pretty good over the last few weeks. Of course we have been getting the usual afternoon showers, but that is expected during the summertime in Florida.
The only way redfishing could get any better is if the fish started jumping in the boat. It is the time of year when the redfish are starting to show up in big numbers. We have caught a number of fish over 30 inches. The fish of the week last week was a 36 inch redfish. You can definitely tell when you hook a fish that is over 30 inches on light tackle. We have hooked a few fish that were over 40 inches, but didn't manage to get them to the boat. Redfishing will just continue to improve over the next few weeks.
On the other hand, snook fishing hasn't been as productive as redfishing. We have managed to catch some great fish with the right tide. We are still catching some 30 inchers. Much like the redfish, snook put up a great fight. Once you hook a snook they usually jump out of the water or come up and shake their big heads. That is when you know it's game on.
Trout fishing has been really good. While fishing for trout we also catch many other types of fish such as snapper, mackerel, blue fish, flounder, grouper, sharks, and jacks. Trout fishing is a great type of fishing to do with kids for that reason. You never know what is going to be on the end of the line.
Tarpon have finally showed back up. We've been doing most of our tarpon fishing in the Tampa Bay around the Skyway Bridge, and we have caught fish ranging from 15lbs to 150lbs. Most of the fish we've caught have been around 50lbs to100 lbs. Take a look at the picture of the 120lb tarpon we did get to the boat. The fish outweighed the angler!
