The kayak fishing here in the Sarasota area can be summed up in just three words for Sun Coast Kayak Sport Fishing clients - "Tarpon and Snook!" Clients of Sun Coast Kayak Sport Fishing have been jumping and landing small Tarpon from 15# up to 40# on every trip into the river systems of this area. On three local rivers we have been finding large areas of deeper water holding great numbers of Tarpon. These areas are far off the beaten path but are worth the paddle just for your chance to fight a tarpon months before the traditional Tarpon season even kicks off.
The Snook are laid up in these areas too after recent cold fronts have pushed them far up into the backcountry to find water temperatures and conditions that will allow them to survive the winter. Because the Snook and Tarpon are held up in the same areas it has been easy to target both species in a small area with great success. The bite for both of these fish should continue throughout the winter season as the Tarpon are resident populations of smaller fish who stay in these areas until they are large enough to move out into the Gulf and join the breeding populations, while the Snook will remain far up these rivers until the spring time brings warmer temperatures.
