Captain Judy's Saltwater Fishing Report
Inshore Suggestions
Big Red Fish
At this time of the year it's not unusual to get reports of large bull red fish being caught while fishing the beachfronts, docks, or bridges. This is a normal occurrence. However, when just limiting your targeting to this fish alone you might be a little boring. Here's a suggestion that might get you the best of both catching worlds! If your fishing plan is to just fish without any agenda, then I suggest doing just that. Fishing on the bottom with just fresh dead or frozen shrimp should work well. What's cruising on the bottom is going to bite your hook, which means when you get a little action "set the hook!" This style of fishing doesn't limit you catching ability. Now all fishermen including me want to catch a big fish. However, targeting only a large fish can be sort of boring. So here's a suggestion that should work and usually does. Keep fishing with the bottom rig set up. However that first fish caught if you can spare it should be quickly decapitated. The head from a fresh fish offers up much in the big fish-attracting department. The gills of a just caught fish are full of blood offering up good scents that draw hungry fish in to the area. As the current flows through the head scents are carried down current. Any hungry fish scouting the area normally will pick up the scent and follow it right back to the source. This gives you an unbelievable hook up opportunity! The good news about using the old fish head trick, as bait on the bottom is that you don't really have to hold the rod. The reason being is that the fish eating it will give you plenty of notice that it has arrived and it's hungry. The first thing the hungry fish is going to do is to try and pick up the head. This is normally a feat that the fish tries to do several times before moving it. This means that you will have time to drop the rod that you are holding and grab the one getting the action. I don't suggest grabbing it and setting the hook right of way, because you need to give your next large hook up time to eat first!
