Fishing Report for Week of Oct. 31th, 2007 for Master Baiter's Sportfishing and Tackle
Written By: Stan Gabruk
The seasons are changing here in Puerto Vallarta, the mornings are very cool with a brisk bite, to me anyway. The days are warm and wonderful for the Sun Bather, fisherman, and shopper alike. More and more people are coming into the Marina to discover the restaurants, shops and of course to check out the daily catch on the docks in Marina Vallarta!
This time of the year it's a "no brainer", if you're not coming in with large gamefish, it's you, not the fishing. This past week if you were Surf Fishing, you could experience Rooster fish, Bonito, Needle Fish and the list goes on.
Of course, if you actually get in a boat and find yourself in the Punta Mita Area, you'd be boating Hermosa or Beautiful Mahi Mahi like it was fishing in a barrel! In fact this week a 200 lb. Black Marlin was boated just eight miles off the point and this is something that NEVER HAPPENS. So if your looking to fish on a budget and get some great fish, charter a Super Panga and in four hours or longer, you could come back with enough fish to feed an army (but please don't). Sailfish, Roosterfish, Yellowfin Tuna (smaller) and many other gamefish are waiting for you to show up! So what's stopping you?
Corbetena and El Banco this week continue to be fickle. The Yellowfin Tuna are out there, but you could be out there hitting these fish in the head with a Skipjack Tuna and they just don't care. You see there's been a real mix of bait fish in our World Famous Fishing Grounds and if you're not presenting the correct color for that day, you'll come up empty handed. Those trying kites and trolling found the old reliable methods, weren't so reliable this week. But if you took a six inch "Popper", cast it into the middle of a Tuna Boil, you'd have Monster Yellowfin Tuna fighting to take your bait. Another trick this past week was the old trick of having a lure skirt just dangle off the nose of a Google eye or even a sewn up Skipjack. Using Green, Black, Purple or Pink, or combinations of these colors this week has saved the day when it came to Yellowfin Tuna. Pink bowling pin teasers have making the fish come up, mostly Marlin, but who's complaining?
The one area that's come alive again is the "Golden Triangle" I speak of from time to time. The area from Corbetena, El Banco and El Morro are fertile fishing ground for Wahoos these days! Just use that fancy and expensive equipment you spent thousands on and map the channels in this area. The channels when trolled with lures with wire leader and rigs will bring make sure you don't lose these elusive beauties after a strike.
Most people don't know that Wahoo is a non-schooling fish. This means anytime you actually get a hook-up, it's usually by accident. You see, Wahoo have a set of teeth that makes a Ginsu Knife look like a butter knife. These fish bite their prey in half, then come back and eat the pieces. If you're not using wire leader and have your lure rigged with wire as well, chance of coming in with one of these beauties is slim at best. One thing for sure, they'll destroy a Black Bart lure in one shot. But hey, who said we were in this game to save money?
A reminder, the Pez Vela Y Marlin Tournament sponsored by the Club De Pesca happens between the 15th and 18 of November this year and promises to be incredible to the extreme! It's not too late to enter either. The Pez Vela Tournaments web page is: www.fishvallarta.com and has all the information you need to enter.
Tournament prices for boats at this time of the year are normally double the normal cost due to the extended hours of fishing, bait, and other associated expenses. Not to mention the age old ‘Supply and Demand" issue keeps coming up. But Master Baiter's knows this can be cost prohibitive and is only kicking our prices up the additional cost of fuel, bait, and other small expenses. We also have several boats to choose from so don't let the cost be the reason you don't win part of the $300,000.00 usd prize, which included cars, boats, cash and more. I have a 38 ft. Luhrs Express that's almost brand new and is tournament ready for : $5,500.00 usd for the Pez Vela Tournament. I also have a beautiful 31 ft. Bertram Classic for an unheard of price of $4,000.00 usd. Remember, this is the home town tournament and they want to play…. And play to win! You'll still have the entry fee of $1,500.00 usd per pole, most people run four lines, you can do the math. If you know tournament prices, your jaw just dropped!
This week I'm attaching pictures of a rare fish in Puerto Vallarta indeed! A rare Spearfish that was boated at Corbetena this week. We all know they're out there, but we never see one. I was talking to a fishing Guru here and he told me in his 40 years of fishing these waters, he's only seen two, this being the second.
If that doesn't sound strange enough, the same guy boated a White Marlin, the same one that's on the endangered list. The fisherman here never see these so figured it was an Albino Marlin. Must have been some strange current, back to back White Marlin, Spearfish, Same guy, Voodo Hoodo……. Sorry for no picture, I'm sure you understand.
Master Baiter's would like to thank Robert Conrad of Vancouver Canada for supporting the Fight Graffiti Campaign we have going. Robert donated twenty gallons of paint and even donated his vacation time to paint over these eye sores. So thanks Robert and we look forward to seeing you again next year. So if you see a guy in a Master Baiter's T-shirt painting a wall, it's Carlos and he'll take your donation with a smile!
For those of you coming down just before or during the Thanksgiving holiday, be sure you book your reservation early. This is a very popular time of the year, considered by many the best time of the year. Al the better charter companies are booking these dates now, so if you're interested in fishing, don't wait.
Well… that's it for this week. Thanks to my loyal readers as usual and remember you can contact me to ask me anything about anything, not just fishing! Until next week, don't forget to kiss your fish!
