Inshore
The "Rupert" Has Spoken!
My inshore fishing friend "Rupert Heller" is back, because this is his favorite time to fish! He loves the fall/winter bite. Rupert and his wife Patsy did a little inshore fishing this past week. The bottom line to the report is that "detail makes all the difference in the catching world!"
Rupert is a true believer in the use of light tackle. He likes 4 1/2-foot rods and miniature spinners reels loaded with 4-pound test monofilament line. The "Rupert" still on occasion uses his traditional long rod with a level wind reel. This set up is best used when the wind is blow and the big trout float is needed to deliver the bait. However, when it comes to putting his unusual baits deep he likes ultra light tackle and "Rupert prepped baits!"
Patsy and Rupert Heller fished this past week using the light stuff even though the northeast wind was howling. As he gave me this fishing report he said, "we had to find a place close to the dock and it had to be also tucked in out of the wind!" According to Rupert he knew of such a place where he could basically work his magical lures making them look alive on the bottom. For those that don't know this is called the "world famous Rupert stroll!" Here's the list of what he used, how he caught it, and the fish he got some serious bite attention from:
Lures used were gold screw tail with white jig head, which sported a pink eye. The next was a silver screw tail green jig head, which he touched up with green and red dots of paint. His last used and most picked especially for this time of the year was the "electric chicken." His most used head color for this lure is a pink jig head. All jig heads are 1/8 ounce and once touched up personally by him are dipped in clear coating to seal his customized deal! On some occasions he mixes a little glitter in his clear coat. I do want to add that it's no use looking for these lures in the tackle shop, because you certainly won't find them. However, you can purchase some forms of them and touch them up yourself. Rupert has fished for many years and has come up with these working combinations. I have visited his personal tackle workshop and believe me a lot of thought has been put into each lure's working design.
Rupert has another lure that he was using to which "no add ons" were made. As he describes this fresh water type lure described reminded me of what is known as a "Hal-fly." These are small 1/16-ounce jig head lures types, which have a rounded head with eyes, soft style body, and then feathers "look-a-likes" on the tail section. The soft style body, which is threaded on the single small hook's shaft, looks like what a screw tail without the tail part. In this case the tail part is a frizzy material that looks like feathers, but isn't. This lure made a hit with the trout. He tied it directly on his four-pound test line and gave it a serious pitch to where he though was the "strike zone!"
The "Rupert Stroll" originated by Rupert himself is simple, but very effective in getting a solid bite. He simply cast his lure, lets it fall to the bottom jigs it a bit, pauses, jigs it a bit, and pauses. After a few jigs and pauses he normally is hooked up, but if not he repeats until the fish can't stand it anymore!
The duo team of "Patsy and Rupert" caught a "Baker Dozen trout!" Most spotted sea trout were right at legal size and were released back to the wild. However, a few were kept for supper, which were cooked with Patsy's secret sauce! Now you know the rest of the story!
