Fishing report for the week ending 7/11/2010
The late summer heat is on, with billions of gallons of fresh water flowing into the bay the bait and the majority of the best fishing is in and around the beaches and passes.
There are still some snook in the river and Matlacha pass but with salinity levels very low our mangrove snappers have left the bay for the most part and are nothing like they have been in the past couple of years inshore.
Redfish have showed better activity after the rainy forth of July weekend which cooled the bay water down a few degrees.
Sea trout and spanish mackerel have been good around the passes, heavy chumming with shinners is the best bet.
We were able to catch some quality size snook and redfish with John Mcvaughn and his family on Tuesday.
Friday while fishing with Gary Brown and his family we had the surprise of hooking a 70lb. Tarpon while trout fishing.
Gary fought the fish on 20lb. Tackle for 45 minutes and we were able to get a leader touch on extremely light tackle.
Sharks are still all through the bay and on the beaches.
