Savannah Snapper Banks
Bottom fishing is good for large vermilion snapper. This fish normally prefers jellyfish as its main diet. However, I don't suggest using this as bait. Most of the vermilion we caught was spitting up small juvenile squid and small crabs. We stripped small piece of squid and fillet a couple of keeper vermilion as bait. Small pieces of squid waving in the current will get this fish's attention. Another good bait is fillet vermilion snapper. Cut your fillets into small chunks, put on hook with red skin showing, and get ready to set that hook. Please remember vermilion snapper have to be 12 inches to keep with a bag limit of 10 per person.
This fish can have a funny bite or it's a slammer type. The good news is once you figure out their bite pattern you will find yourself in the hook up mode. I am always suggesting that my customers drop to the bottom, reel up a few inches, and wait for a hit. I also suggest taking their hand off the reel's handle so that they don't do what is call "reel set." This is where you reel while trying to set the hook. It's natural to do this, but when trying to hook this fish up it's best to set, then grab the handle, and reel. Vermilion stage at a certain depth and normally will stay there until all available food source is gone. Moving your bait un-naturally normally "backs" the fish off. This means you are going to have to wait to get them back into their comfortable feeding zone!

King Mackerel
We caught them like crazy in the early spring until about first of May. Then the catching stopped and the searching began. I have received some isolated catches of small kings fish while trolling deep with spoons and live baits. There have been scattered catches of larger king fish being caught while trolling deep around the naval towers located on the backside of the banks. The blue waters of the Gulf Stream have been holding the attentions of this fish. I believe where you find the bait you will find the fish! The bottom line to this report is wherever you are fishing there certainly is a chance of catching this fish, because the sporadic movement of the bait. Most fish that I have caught have been pulled from the deepest part of the water column that I happened to be fishing!
