The action in Ft. Lauderdale this month has been off the scale. Tons of bonitos and kingfish biting. Most of the fish have been caught on the drift boats, Mary B III and Catch My Drift. They have been coming in with an average of 20-30 bonitos, 6-8 kingfish, a few snappers(yellowtail and muttons) and a few other reef critters. The action is always good in the summer time but this summer was better than any I've ever fished and I've fished a lot of summers out of these waters. The bonitos came through on their annual migration this year better than the past 4 years. Its good to see them so plentyful out here as they are the source of food for a lot of the other big game fish.
Sportfishing has been good this summer too. Lots of big game sharks, big barracuda, blackfin tuna, wahoo, sailfish and swordfish. That brings me to another topic, the swordfishing off Fort Lauderdale has been awesome this year. Every year, since they banned longlining off the coast it has gotten better. Thanks to the Florida lawmakers for banning longlining, it has made a real difference in the fishing out here. Other than that, a few really nice blackfin tuna being caught on the reefs, snappers are biting on the night time anchor trips(mangrove snapper, yellowtail and mutton snapper). A few cobia landed these past couple weeks and a tarpon or two have been caught in the intercoastal waters. Hope to see you all out there fishing. Until next week...
