Updated 7/8/07 – The Summer Fishing Season is in full swing. We are catching Striped Bass in good numbers, and good size fish. In the past weeks worth of trips, most groups limited out*** within the first hour of their trip. The fish we have been catching have been big, strong, and fat. Much better then what I remember from last season, in which we saw a record number of Striped Bass landed, but mostly smaller fish.
Recapping the Month of June, the Striped Bass, had been mostly in the upper part of the Saco River, where they had been chasing the Alewives. We were averaging 20-30 Stripers per half day trip. Most were "Schoolie Size", but everyone also got some keepers to bring back for supper. Now that the Herring run has pretty much subsided, the Striped Bass have started to set up shop out in the Ocean.
It was nice to get back out on the Ocean last week and have a little space around us. The weather started out sunny and calm, at the beginning of the week. As we got to the middle of the week the wind started to increase, and the seas grew choppy. Thursday, while most boats were either back at the dock or fishing the river, we were out hammering the Striped Bass. The seas were rough, the wind was strong, and standing up in the boat was a challenge. But we were catching fish, and a lot of them. It was nice not having any other boats around, and several of the spots I fish day in and day out remained free of other boats.
On Friday, the fog was thick on our 6:00AM trip. However, the fishing was still red hot!! Our 10:00AM trip was cut short due to heavy Thunderstorms. The 2:00PM trip also barely got finished before T-storms chased us back to the dock.
Last week we averaged about 20 Striped Bass per trip. Mostly all keepers or too big for the slot requirements. The biggest fish of the week was a 35" Striped Bass, caught during a CHILDRENS TRIP, by Claire from Ontario…….
I would to say a special THANK YOU to the following groups for the very generous tip following your trip. Mark Griffin, Kevin Jankoski, Larry Reid, and Joe Pritchett. Thanks again guys. It is very much appreciated. – Captain Todd
