Trinity River & Klamath River Fishing Guides Salmon & Steelhead Report
Fishing for Spring salmon on the Trinity River has been slow due to high river releases as reported by Trinity river salmon guides. Flows have started their scheduled drop and with the lower flows Trinity river salmon fishing is starting to improve. Flows will stabilize at 450 cfs by the end of the month. These are chrome bright and hard fighting salmon 8 to 12 pounds on average with the occasional salmon in the 20 pound class a real possibility on the Trinity river this season. Trinity river salmon guides are reporting salmon scattered from Lewiston, Ca. downstream to Grays Falls. Side drifting and back bouncing roe has been best technique for bank and boat fishermen. Recent fires in Northern California has made for poor air quality on the the Trinity. Trinity river fishing guides are reporting some steelhead and brown trout mixed in as well. The Trinity and Klamath rivers are two of the three rivers in California that anglers can keep salmon this time of year. Most Spring salmon have moved through the lower Klamath river with a below average Spring salmon run this year being reported by Klamath river salmon guides. Steelhead, some in the mid teens, are still being reported by Klamath river steelhead guides in the lower Klamath around Klamath Glen. Summer steelhead fishing should improve in the coming weeks. Flows are down below 7000 cfs and water temps are warming. This years quota is 22,500 salmon to begin in mid August. The Klamath and Trinity river's will be the only river's besides the Smith river that angler's can keep salmon on this season with the Sacramento river offering a very small season from November 1st to December 31st from Red Bluff diversion dam downstream to Knight's Landing.

Fishing for wild rainbow trout on the lower Sacramento or Sac River from Redding downstream below Anderson, Ca. has remained good for Sacramento river trout guides both on conventional spin and fly gear. River releases from Keswick dam near Redding have stabilized to 13,000 cfs with no scheduled changes at this time. Sacramento river trout guides are reporting good fishing for wild rainbow trout 1 to 3 pounds with the occasional big trout of 4 plus pounds from redding downstream near Red Bluff. Depending on which section of river you fish will determine which baits are best. Many Sacramento river rainbow trout have been over 16 inches with some in the twenty plus inch class. 15 to 20 plus Sacramento river rainbow trout hook-ups a day a real possibility this time of year. Boats cannot pass the Cypress bridge construction in Redding from 7,000cfs and up. Side drifting small glo bugs in various egg color combo's and/or live cricket or crawler's with a Quickie puffball have worked well for Sacramento river trout fishing guides. Back trolling small Hot shots 50's or small K-4/K-5 Kwikfish in various color combos can also be very effective for Sacramento river trout guides. Angler's can call ahead for current river condition's as condition's can change quickly on the Sacramento or sac river.
Sacramento Salmon Guides Salmon Season Update for 2008
All Central Valley rivers are now closed to salmon fishing to protect the Sacramento River Fall Chinook salmon. The salmon season will re-open on November 1st and remain open until December 31st, 2008. Angler's will be allowed one salmon per person and salmon fishing will be allowed from the Red Bluff Diversion Dam downstream to Knight's Landing.
