Fishing today was about the same as yesterday as for numbers and size
of fish but with 25 to 35 MPH winds we had to change our game plan a little.
My great friend and client Jack Goldsmith is in town from TN to fish for 6 days
and this is the way you want every fishing trip to start. With the winds
blowing 25 MPH at daylight we head north on the river to fish some
protected shallow flats. We have been doing well on these flats casting a
1/16 oz rattle weight with a Bitters 7.5 Junebug blue tail worm. But today
with the strong winds it was impossible so Jack picked up a spinner bait
and began to wear them out.Jacks big fish was 9 1/4 pounds and there were
many 3 to 6 pounders to go along.Total count was around 25 fish.
Jack brought down his new Skeeter ZX250 and man what a nice boat
BUT it's not what you want to be fishing the shallow flats we have here on
the St Johns River out of.I spent as much time out of the boat pushing as I
did running the trolling motor from inside the boat.At one point in the day I
just walked behind the boat pushing it along as Jack was catching fish after
fish.We will be fishing out of my old 181 Stratos the next 5 days.
The water level is very very low on the river at this time and can be very dangerous
if you don't know where you are going.I have seen many fisherman run a ground
the past few weeks and I have seen a couple that had to spend the night until
they could get help the next day,
